The Beginning

Goodie Mouse sat quietly, peeking into the chapel of the little country church. Most of the time, the church was pretty empty, but today was something special! There were some visitors giving a speech about their adventures in some faraway places that Goodie had never heard of before. It was crowded! Almost all the pews in the chapel were full.

When the service was over, the congregation and guest speakers went to the fellowship hall to eat. Normally Goodie Mouse would also follow over, but on this day, he neglected his hungry belly and rushed back to talk with his parents. He began to think really hard. At last, he came to his mom and dad and told them what he decided to do.

“Mom, Pops, I heard what those people said, and I want to go. I want to help do something good in the world”.

Pops looked at him over his bifocals and gave a little chuckle. “Son, you are only a little church mouse! What can you, or any of us, do to help others?”

Goodie looked back at his dad and simply said, “Something. I can do something”.

Mom said, “Oh Goodie. The world is so dangerous for a poor little mouse. You may get hurt!”

Goodie looked at Mom and said, “I know Mom. It won’t be easy, but it will be good. I want to do good, like my name”.

With that, he smiled at them both. He was just about to sneak into the visitors’ bags, which were sitting out in the back of the church, when his mom called out to him.

“Goodie, wait. Before I met your father, I always had a dream of traveling and doing good deeds but didn’t have the nerve. But I had thought about how I would do it, and I want to give you some things to help you on your trip.

Then Mom opened up a little crack in the side wall of their home and showed Goodie her little “stash”.

“Here are some things that you will need for your journey. I have here a map of the world, a suitcase, and the keys to your great uncle’s plane for your travels”. He used to use it on the farm."

Goodie was overjoyed but also in shock. “Mom, I never knew!”

“I know. I was afraid to even talk about it. It was a dream I had when I was young, but now it is your turn. Go out there and do some good!”

Seeing Goodie with his supplies, his dad ran over to say goodbye. “While this may not be the plan I had for you, I know that we have raised you well, and I trust your choice.” “May God bless you in your travels. We love you! Don't forget to write!”
